Approximately Home explores my definition of home through trivial findings and everyday objects in domestic settings. Humanity has gained immense mobility via globalization; however, the sense of belonging, a vital element to mental health, has been much compromised by the transient nature of migration. In addition, the emotional struggles of leaving home and familiarities are largely neglected due to the rugged individualism in modern society.
I left Shanghai to study in America at the age of fifteen. In the years I have been abroad, I travelled to numerous countries on all continents and lived in various cities around the globe: New York, Los Angeles, London, Istanbul, and Shanghai. My ephemeral memories of these places are ambiguous and sometimes pensive. Often feeling nostalgic but not knowing where exactly is home, I hope to rediscover the meaning of home, a consistently changing physical and cultural space.
